Pranayama is the fourth limb of classical Ashtanga Yoga. It is a powerful practice which involves controlled breathing patterns and breath holding exercises.
Unlike freediving where the focus is on making the breath hold longer, in pranayama we also work on lengthening the inhalation and the exhalation. This makes it not just beneficial for the respiratory but also act as a preparation for mental practices like concentration and meditation.
The great freediver Jacques Mayol was known to be a practitioner of pranayama and was the one who brought it into the world of freediving. Nowadays pranayama has become an important part of any serious freediver’s training.
